OECD work on gender by area

The demographic profile of teachers and principals focused on age and gender. Important gender differences found included the following:
- On average, approximately 70% of teachers were female. In all TALIS countries, the majority of teachers were female
- On average, approximately 45% of principals were female. Patterns in all countries suggest that males move up the career ladder to become principals more often than females.
Professional development of teachers: Although no differences were found in participation in or intensity of professional development for female and male teachers, female teachers were more likely to report wanting more professional development in all TALIS countries (though differences were small, and this was especially true for teachers below the age of 40)
Beliefs, attitudes and teaching practices: Female teachers reported endorsing direct transmission beliefs less strongly than male teachers and reported greater use of structuring and student-oriented practices. Female teachers also reported to be more involved in co-operative activities than male teachers. These findings suggest female’s greater professionalism and motivation.
