SEE Economies

The SEE regional programme is bringing economies from the region closer to the OECD, aiming to deepen the dialogue with the Organisation and support their reform agendas. In particular, SEE economies have intensified their participation in OECD bodies and their adherence to legal instruments. They have integrated a number of statistical reporting and information systems, and benchmarking exercises such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and they have continued to participate in OECD Global Forums, publications and policy reviews.

Building on their co-operation with the OECD since the 1990s, and with the assistance of inter-ministerial coordinating mechanisms of joint work, BulgariaCroatia and Romania, which are important regional players, have been continuously strengthening their OECD engagement with a view of potential membership.

To further develop their relationships and contribute to the work of the Organisation in a more sustainable fashion, a number of visits at head-of-state and government level have taken place since 1992. On these occasions, and in related correspondence, the three countries have reiterated their requests to join the OECD as members and have welcomed the adoption of a Framework for the Consideration of Prospective Members in 2017. The three countries already meet some important aspects of the Framework, while the successful completion of EU accession processes has boosted their capacity to potentially sustain an OECD accession process with a view to OECD membership.
