Every scientific breakthrough and every new technology starts with people. The research and innovation workforce underpins countries' greatest ambitions in terms of economic prosperity and societal wellbeing. Yet the evidence on this workforce has long been scattered and incomplete.
This report offers a comprehensive account of research and innovation careers as they stand today. It draws on the evidence base of the Research and Innovation Careers Observatory (ReICO), a joint OECD-EU initiative designed to shed light on the supply, mobility and outcomes of the people who drive research and innovation forward. Comparative indicators describe the size and composition of the research and innovation workforce in each country, how it is being renewed, which parts of the labour market its members work in, and the conditions, outcomes and international mobility they experience. The findings provide a resource for policymakers, for the institutions that fund, employ and train research and innovation personnel, and for those working or considering working in the field.
