Protected areas are a cornerstone of biodiversity conservation and can play a key role in addressing the triple planetary crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution. While each of these challenges requires targeted policy responses, recognising their interlinkages is essential to maximising synergies and minimising potential trade-offs. Integrating climate change and pollution considerations into the design and management of protected areas can help ensure they remain effective as environmental conditions evolve. Drawing on insights from the OECD’s Environmental Outlook on the Triple Planetary Crisis, this brief highlights opportunities for more integrated approaches to managing and expanding protected areas.
