This paper examines how Portugal can improve the conditions for implementing more environmentally sustainable mining projects while enhancing regional development benefits, with a focus on strengthening governance and the permitting process. It draws on in-person interviews and insights gathered during visits to the two Portuguese regions participating in this project: Alentejo and Centro. Separate papers for each region will outline more specific actions, addressing topics such as innovation, public perception, skills, and infrastructure.
