As healthcare systems increasingly prioritise people-centred care, patient-reported data have become central to assessing health system performance. The OECD Patient-Reported Indicator Surveys (PaRIS) initiative supports international comparison and cross-country learning by developing, standardising and collecting harmonised data on patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREMs) from primary care users and their practices across OECD Member and Partner countries. Beyond PaRIS, other international population-based health and health system surveys include the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), the International Health Policy (IHP) Survey of the Commonwealth Fund, the People’s Voice Survey (PVS) and the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Although these surveys may appear to collect similar information, they differ substantially in purpose, scope and methodology. This paper positions PaRIS within this wider ecosystem, examining its distinctive value proposition and the benefits of participating in PaRIS alongside existing international surveys, based on methodological comparisons and analyses of overlapping indicators.
