The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is a Canadian federal funding agency that promotes and supports research and training in the social sciences and humanities. SSHRC funds projects through competitive grants and fellowships, aiming to advance knowledge, build capacity, and foster collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and communities.
Most SSHRC grant applications contain a mandatory Knowledge Mobilization module. Knowledge Mobilization (KM) modules are tools and frameworks embedded in projects to promote the dissemination, transfer, and application of research knowledge. These modules are essential for ensuring that research findings benefit broader society by reaching non-academic stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, and the public. Knowledge mobilization plans are evaluated when assessing the project’s feasibility and its potential for impact within and beyond the social sciences.
KM modules promote data sharing and re-use, encouraging diverse sectors to leverage research data for practical applications and facilitate the development of AI and data-mining applications by preparing data for machine-readability to enable innovative uses, such as predictive modeling or policy simulation.
