Ireland’s National Persistent Identifier (PID) Strategy and Roadmap outlines a coordinated framework for the adoption and implementation of a national PID system to enhance the visibility, traceability, and interoperability of Irish research. Developed under the National Open Research Forum (NORF), the strategy provides recommendations for integrating PIDs across the research lifecycle, from publications and datasets to researchers, institutions, and grants.
The plan emphasizes impact, openness, and interoperability as guiding principles, aligning Ireland’s approach with international best practices and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). It promotes the use of globally recognized identifiers such as DOIs (for research outputs), ORCID iDs (for researchers), and ROR IDs (for organizations), ensuring persistent links between entities and their contributions.
By fostering consistent PID adoption across repositories, funders, and institutions, the strategy seeks to strengthen national research infrastructure, support open science practices, and improve the discoverability and accountability of publicly funded research.
