ELIXIR is a federated infrastructure that connects life science resources across Europe to support biological data management and analysis. It integrates national bioinformatics resources, including databases, tools, compute facilities, and training programs, into a coordinated system accessible to researchers.
It operates as a federation of national nodes across its 23 member countries, each contributing specific services and expertise. These nodes are supported by a central hub that provides coordination and governance. It offers a range of interoperable services for life sciences, including data repositories (e.g., EMBL-EBI resources), analysis tools and workflows, and training platforms for data stewardship and bioinformatics.
ELIXIR's Compute Platform is creating a network of supercomputer services that is making it easier for researchers to manage huge amounts of data. It enables researchers across Europe to use existing facilities to access, store, transfer and analyse large and complex datasets, in the cloud.
The Data Platform is establishing quality criteria for data resources, so researchers can more easily choose the best suited to their needs. The Platform also works to better link data and related literature.
