Air Emissions Accounts (AEAs) are based on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) Central Framework. Adopted as an international standard by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2012, the SEEA Central Framework applies the accounting concepts, structures, rules, and principles of the System of National Accounts (SNA). Consequently, air emissions are directly comparable with macro-economic variables such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), value added or output.
Air emissions are attributed to national economies based on the residence of the economic units (e.g. households or companies) involved. The dataset also includes bridging items designed to reconcile these figures with the national emissions inventories which are compiled according to the territory principle.
The OECD collects annual AEAs from countries in close collaboration with Eurostat and the United Nations Statistics Division. Additionally, the OECD also provides quarterly estimates for total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the OECD area as a whole.
