As the landscape of science, technology, and innovation (STI) evolves, there is a growing need for experimental approaches to collaborative STI governance. While institutions across the OECD are generally adept at meeting established responsibilities, they are now being asked to contribute to a broader array of objectives: from enhancing competitiveness and resilience to accelerating the digital transition, mitigating climate change, and protecting the environment and biodiversity. Effective governance today requires new methods for coordinating diverse stakeholders—government, industry, civil society, and research. Could embracing experimentation in governance offer a more adaptive, responsive approach to these pressing challenges? This brief explores how such strategies might shape the future of decision-making and STI policy, offering a glimpse into the evolving governance landscape.
