All life on Earth depends on biodiversity and water. Yet these invaluable natural resources are under increasing threat from multiple pressures caused by human activities. OECD analysis on biodiversity, covering both species and ecosystems, and water supports governments in developing policies that yield greater environmental benefits in a cost-effective and inclusive way.
Biodiversity – the variety of life on Earth – provides us with ecosystem services vital for human health, well-being and our economies. Yet, terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems are declining rapidly, threatening societies and economic resilience. The OECD provides data, analysis and good practice insights to help governments design effective, efficient and fair biodiversity policies.
Halting and reversing current trends in biodiversity loss will require governments and the private sector to mobilise and align finance for biodiversity. The OECD collects data on biodiversity-related finance and economic incentives, and identifies opportunities for scaling up, aligning, and enhancing the effectiveness of finance for biodiversity. It also provides insights on how countries can strengthen biodiversity finance tracking and reporting. This work supports implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
