The project to develop a new Guidance Document on the determination of concentrations of nanomaterials in biological samples for (eco)toxicity studies was included in the OECD Test Guideline Work Plan in 2021 based on a proposal from the United Kingdom. The aim of the Guidance Document is to support the undertaking of toxicity and ecotoxicity studies carried out in accordance with Test Guidelines and Guidance Documents relevant for the risk assessment of nanomaterials.
First commenting round on the determination of concentrations of nanomaterials in biological samples for (eco)toxicity studies
- Submission period
- 2 October - 13 November 2026
Background public consultation
Project description
The new Guidance Document will reflect the international state of the art and contain: (a) descriptions of available analytical techniques; (b) guidance on appropriate sample preparation protocols to prepare biological samples for analysis; and c) guidance on appropriate validation approaches. The aim of the Guidance Document is to assist in the choice of basic technique as well as to provide an understanding of the limitations on the results to support the undertaking of (eco)toxicity studies.
How to contribute
The draft Guidance Document on the determination of concentrations of nanomaterials in biological samples for (eco)toxicity studies is currently under a commenting round by the Working Party of the National Coordinators of the Test Guidelines Programmes and open for comments from the public at the same time. Interested parties are invited to contact their National Coordinators at least a week before 13 November 2026.
