International Data Governance and Privacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

This first roundtable will discuss the need for enhancing data access and sharing for AI, while protecting individual rights including privacy but also other rights or interests, such as intellectual property rights. It will highlight importance of data access and sharing for AI, exploring how countries develop policies in this space, including national data strategies for AI, and how technical or organisational approaches such as privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) or regulatory sandboxes are being considered to complement existing data governance and privacy frameworks in such contexts. The roundtable will provide the opportunity to launch the publication “Enhancing Access to and Sharing of Data in the Age of AI”, which complements the OECD Recommendation on Enhancing Access to and Sharing of Data.

At this second roundtable, the heads of select prominent privacy and data protection authorities (DPAs) will explore the application of privacy and data protection principles to AI, with the aim of promoting responsible innovation. By focusing on the role of privacy and data protection in fostering trust in AI, the discussion will cover crucial topics such as legal bases for processing personal data, the implementation of a risk-based approach, and the role of DPAs in AI data governance. The roundtable will demonstrate how privacy and data protection frameworks act as vital enablers for sound data governance. Additionally, this session will provide an opportunity to announce the issuance of a joint statement by privacy and data protection authorities on the key topics discussed.
