To meet the needs of our societies, the OECD promotes new approaches to teaching, research and collaboration. Globally, policymakers are increasingly calling on higher education institutions (HEIs) to respond to the most difficult social and economic challenges facing our societies – from digitalisation to social inequality to climate change.
Yet, HEIs are not automatic cure-alls. To meet the needs of current society and promote innovation in all regions, HEIs need to examine whether traditional approaches to teaching, research and collaboration are effective.
EECOLE’s global network maximises the contributions that HEIs make to local economic, social, and environmental development by bringing together these partners.

1/ Mainstreaming access to higher quality entrepreneurship education. EECOLE facilitates pedagogies that positively affect entrepreneurial mindsets to empower individuals vis-à-vis the future of work and society. Partners in this project will help develop the definition and the piloting of measuring tools, such as surveys and online digital tools. |
2/ Promoting the place-responsiveness of HEIs to fill the gap between research and innovation. From 2022 to 2024, the OECD will conduct a series of regional reports on the effects HEIs have on their surrounding communities and networks and how purposeful collaboration can improve these linkages. EECOLE and its partners will develop specific regional analysis and a handbook for policymakers and higher education leaders. |
3/ Supporting HEIs becoming champions of SDGs in their cities and regions. The regional distribution of HEIs in most cities and regions, with many large cities hosting an ecosystem of diverse HEIs, makes them ideal partners for cities and regions that aim to achieve sustainable development. Partners to this project will contribute to an international exercise to identify and develop innovative practices for HEIs to engage with their regions on the SDGs. |
