Abstract

DataON is a national research data platform delivered by the Korean Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) that systematically manages research data produced by Korean-funded research institutes, supporting data sharing and utilization at a national level. The DataON respository os one of three platforms/services integrated into KISTI's Infrastructure (repository). The other two include:

- ScienceON: An integrated service that connects various science and technology knowledge resources, facilitating open collaboration and providing comprehensive information required for research activities.

- NTIS (National Science & Technology Information Service): A one-stop portal federating information on national R&D projects from multiple databases, enhancing user accessibility and improving R&D efficiency.

KISTI's infrastructure encompasses several integrated platforms designed to enhance the management, sharing, and utilization of scientific and technological information.

Background

DataON, the national research data platform developed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), was launched in January 2020. In 2020, the South Korean government's R&D budget was increased to 24.1 trillion won, reflecting a 17.3% rise from the previous year. This substantial investment underscores the government's commitment to advancing research infrastructure, which likely includes initiatives like DataON.

Objective(s)

To facilitate the national-level sharing and utilization of research data from publicly funded research projects in South Korea. Researchers, institutions, and policymakers can access datasets for reuse, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

The platform ensures long-term preservation of research data. It provides a centralized platform for data discoverability and access. It aligns with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. It supports metadata publication and the assignment of unique digital persistent identifiers (PIDs) for datasets.
