Threatened species is the number of mammals, birds and plants in danger of extinction.
The threatened category refers to critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable species, as well as those possibly already extinct but have definitely been seen in the wild in the past 50 years.
Note that the number of species known does not always accurately reflect the number of species in existence and that varying definitions can limit comparability across countries.
This indicator is measured as a percentage of total known species.
