Tracking Economic Instruments and Finance for Biodiversity: Trends in biodiversity-positive incentives 1980-2026

The 2026 edition of Tracking Economic Instruments and Finance for Biodiversity provides the latest data on the use of biodiversity-relevant economic instruments (known as positive incentives under the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework). It also includes data on the finance they mobilise or revenues they generate. Drawing on the OECD database on Policy Instruments for the Environment (PINE), which covers data from over 150 countries, it includes information on biodiversity-positive taxes and fees, tradable permits, environmentally motivated subsidies, payments for ecosystem services and biodiversity offsets.
