Is AI across the stack competitive or concentrated?

Over three years after ChatGPT’s launch brought generative AI to global prominence, questions still linger over how competition will evolve in AI markets. The rapid pace of technological change, the concentration of key inputs like data and computing power, and the growing role of partnerships and ecosystems are all reshaping the landscape. Building on recent OECD work, this session will take stock of the current state of competition across the AI stack – from chips and the cloud, to foundational models and downstream applications – and explore what lies in store for competition policy in this fast-moving field space. On 4 March, the OECD Competition Open Day held a panel of international experts to explore the topic.

The session, available on replay below, was moderated by Richard May (OECD Competition Expert) and had as invited speakers:  Yann Guthman (Head of the Digital Economy Unit, French Competition Authority), Catherine Tucker (Sloan Distinguished Professor, MIT Sloan School of Management) and Jan Peter Kleinhans (Policy Analyst, OECD Directorate of Science and Technology).
