The Production Transformation Policy Reviews (PTPRs) is a policy assessment and guidance tool that supports governments in updating their development strategies focusing on economic transformation. They benefit from international peer dialogue and discussions in the context of the OECD Initiative for Policy Dialogue on Global Value Chains, Production Transformation and Development, hosted by the OECD Development Centre since 2013. The PTPRs enrich the OECD Development Pathways Series with their perspective on economic transformation and governance for change.
The PTPR Spotlight on Bioeconomy for Sustainable Development in the Amazon Region (Brazil) was produced at the request of and with the support of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). The project has contributed to the work implemented in the framework of the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB) launched under the Brazilian G20 Presidency in 2024.
The process involved consultations with local and international stakeholders and benefited from a targeted Peer Learning Group (PLG) meeting hosted by the Regional Government of the Azores, Portugal, in July 2024, back-to-back to the 23rd Plenary Meetings of the OECD Initiative for Policy Dialogue on GVCs, Production Transformation and Development.
This report is a timely addition to the OECD Development Pathways Series as it discusses an emerging policy issue – bioeconomy – which could help redefine economic development by ensuring that social inclusion, economic profitability and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. And it does so by putting under the spotlight a key region for Brazil and the whole world economy: the Amazon region.
