Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes

28/03/2025 – A delegation led by the Head of the Secretariat of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes (Global Forum), Ms Zayda Manatta, visited Fiji on 24-26 March 2025. The objective of the visit was to formally launch the comprehensive capacity-building programme to help Fiji, as a new member, put in place the building blocks that are necessary to implement the tax transparency standards and to benefit from them. During the high-level visit, the delegation met with key authorities and explained their respective roles in the successful implementation of the exchange of information standards (EOI standards) by Fiji, the details of the commitments that Fiji took when becoming a member of the Global Forum, and illustrated the benefits of the improved global tax transparency landscape for domestic ressources mobilisation.

The mission provided the opportunity to discuss the Global Forum, the work it carries out and the progress on tax transparency with the Assistant Minister of Finance, the Attorney General, the Governor of the Reserve Bank, the Registrar of Companies, the Heads of Fiji Revenue and Customs Services and Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit, and the Permanent Secretary and senior representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following the high-level meetings, a National Awareness Raising Seminar was delivered to 38 officials from the key governmental authorities and representatives of the private sectors, such as banks and accountants. The seminar aimed to present the Global Forum, the Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters, the Standard of Transparency and Exchange of Information on Request, the Standard of Automatic Exchanges under the Common Reporting Standard and the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework. The Seminar was the occasion to insist on the roles that each body must play in the effective implementation of these EOI standards.

The Global Forum is the leading multilateral body mandated to ensure that jurisdictions around the world adhere to and effectively implement both the exchange of information on request standard and the standard of automatic exchange of information. These objectives are achieved through a robust monitoring and peer review process. The Global Forum also runs an extensive capacity-building programme to support its members in implementing the standards and help tax authorities make the best use of cross-border information sharing channels.
