A Defined Approach (DA) consists of a selection of information sources (e.g., in silico predictions, in chemico, in vitro data) used in a specific combination, and resulting data are interpreted using a fixed data interpretation procedure (DIP) (e.g., a mathematical, rule-based model). DAs use methods in combination and are intended to overcome some limitations of the individual, stand-alone methods. Currently, OECD Test Guideline 467 contains three DAs to come to a rule-based conclusion on potential ocular hazards, where two DAs are for non-surfactant liquids and one for solids.

Project description
The objective of this project is to include a new DA for surfactants (DASF) in Test Guideline 467 (TG 467). The addition of DASF would be a valuable addition to the current version of the TG 467, as it will expand the applicability domain to include surfactants. DASF uses EpiOcularTM and SkinEthicTM HCE Eye Irritation Test (EIT) from TG 492 and a technically adapted version of Short Time Exposure In Vitro Test Method (STE) from TG 491.
How to contribute
Written comments on the draft updated TG 467 can be submitted to the OECD Secretariat for Test Guideline Programme via national coordinators (WNT) representing OECD member states. Experts from the business and industry should send their comments to the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC).
