The Water, Energy, Land-use Nexus in Central Asia programme organised a regional workshop for Central Asia’s financial sector to help mainstream climate resilience into lending operations and exchange good practices on ESG disclosure, green economy taxonomies and thematic bonds.
This regional workshop was hosted by the Union of Banks of the Kyrgyz Republic in partnership with the OECD and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) within the framework of its Green Economy and Sustainable Private Sector Development Programme. The format combined plenary sessions, interactive tool training and peer exchanges among banks and public authorities.
Representatives of Central Asian financial institutions, as well as the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, the State Development Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, international experts and development partners, participated in the workshop.
Day 1 focused on practical tools and training, and Day 2 addressed ESG integration, banking operations, implementation of green taxonomies and bond market development. On Day 3, the participants attended a session led by a state-owned bank pioneering ESG banking in the Kyrgyz Republic and participated in a site visit to review a climate-resilient investment project supported by GIZ.
Participants emphasised the need to advance capacity building efforts in the private sector, align statistical and customs references with the national green taxonomies, further integrate ESG finance practices within the banking sector and expand training partnerships on climate finance, green bond issuance and access to international development finance resources.
