The 2024 GSG Meeting on 15-16 October, co-chaired by Canada and Greece, considered futures of global artificial intelligence (AI) governance, given the potential transformative impacts of this technology on economies and societies, with a focus on Emerging and Developing Economies (EMDEs). Discussions at the meeting generated actionable insights on AI for policymakers, supported the dialogue around global AI governance and helped shape the strategic direction the OECD takes in this area.
The GSG was an interactive and informal discussion under Chatham House Rule over one and a half days. The first part of the meeting discussed the Futures of Global AI Governance with the participation of OECD Accession Countries, Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) members, non-OECD Members, Business at OECD, and the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC). The second part of the meeting, convening OECD Members, focused on the Futures of OECD AI Governance and was devoted to implications for the OECD as an Organisation.
The meeting was structured around a set of strategic foresight scenarios drawing on the best available evidence including OECD analytical work and consultation with external stakeholders from the scientific community, industry, EMDEs and other international organisations.
Two cross-cutting sub-themes were discussed across each of the scenarios:
- AI innovations for sustainable development, environmental protection, productivity growth, labour transformation and social cohesion
- Promoting competitive markets and managing evolving global power dynamics
