On 7 December 2023, the OECD Global Forum on Competition opened with welcoming remarks by Mathias Cormann (OECD Secretary-General) followed by a discussion between Clare Lombardelli (former OECD Chief Economist) and Carmine Di Noia (OECD DAF Director) on the emerging role of industrial policy as a tool for policymakers to address growth.
A panel then provided a horizon scanning, analysing the implications of competition developments in Latin America/Caribbean, Africa, Asia and China. The session also considered the impact of social, political and economic factors on the competition frameworks.
The panel had insights from Fréderic Jenny (Chairman, OECD Competition Committee), Thomas Cheng (Professor, Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong), Angayar Kanni Ramaiah (Senior Lecturer in UiTM Penang, Faculty of Law Universiti Teknologi MARA), Simon Roberts (Professor, Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development, University of Johannesburg), Mario A. Umaña (Lead Trade and Competition Specialist, Inter-American Development Bank) and Angela Zhang (Associate Professor of Law, Director of the Philip K. H. Wong Centre for Chinese Law, University of Hong Kong).
