The Power of Feedback

The Power of Feedback study evaluates the impact of an AI-powered mathematics tutor on student learning, using the OECD’s open-source Platform for Innovative Learning Assessments (PILA). It investigates how generative AI can support formative assessment and personalised learning, with the goal of improving student skills and enhancing teaching practices. The project also strengthens countries' capacity for rigorous impact evaluation.

The study has four main objectives:

• Reducing the knowledge gap on the potential and limits of AI tutors.
• Improving our understanding of teachers' and students' needs and attitudes towards digital formative assessment (with or without AI).
• Building a digital learning and assessment system using AI that functions as an international public good.
• Strengthening methodologies for evidence-based interventions in education.

In early 2026, a pilot study will be conducted before the main cross-national study in Fall 2026.

The project team works with countries to oversee the intervention design and offer opportunities for peer learning.
