Italy: Veneto Spatial Productivity Review

Labour productivity in Veneto: a comparison with peer regions.

This review is the result of a collaboration between Veneto Lavoro, the regional public agency responsible for labour market policies, employment services and labour market data in the Veneto Region, and the OECD Trento Centre for local development, through its Spatial Productivity Lab.

It focuses on the analysis of the growth dynamics of labour productivity in the medium term of the Veneto region in Italy. The comparison of Veneto with regions in OECD countries with similar characteristics makes it possible to identify the points of excellence of the Veneto economic system, as well as the areas lagging behind OECD 'peers' that require targeted economic policy interventions. 

The empirical analysis of the OECD team will be coordinated with the activities of other local actors engaged in economic analysis. 

Implementation period: 2025-2026.

The review combines internationally comparable OECD and Eurostat indicators with firm‑ and worker‑level microdata to analyse labour productivity and its main drivers, including skills, labour markets, infrastructure, innovation and business dynamics. Veneto is benchmarked against a set of OECD “peer” regions with similar size, economic structure and productivity profiles, allowing for meaningful comparisons over time.

The analysis looks at how firms, sectors and labour markets are adapting to major transformations such as digitalisation and the green transition, and explores productivity dynamics at a granular territorial level across Veneto’s local labour markets using administrative and innovative data sources. Particular attention is given to worker retraining and the acquisition of the skills needed to cope with the structural changes affecting OECD economies.
