In November 2018, ministers and deputy ministers of Latin American countries met on the margins of the Global Forum plenary meeting held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, to discuss how to use exchange of information to fight tax fraud and corruption. As a conclusion of the meeting, the Punta del Este Declaration was signed. Signatories agreed to lead by example in tackling illicit financial flows through increased international tax co-operation.
Tax Transparency in Latin America, the first report of its kind dedicated to the issue of tax transparency in Latin America, is a key output of the Punta del Este Declaration. It will be published annually to inform decision makers and citizens on where the region stands and the concrete progress made by Latin American countries on tax transparency.
The live launch event featured a presentation of the report's key findings and panel discussions with experts from partner organisations, followed by a Q&A session. Panellists included speakers from the Financial Action Task Force on Latin America, the Global Forum, the Inter-American Centre of Tax Administrations, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Latin American Network for Economic and Social Justice, the OECD, Tax Justice Network, the World Bank Group as well as high-level representatives from various tax administrations.
