Respiratory sensitisation (hypersensitivity) is a complex immunological process that can lead to long-term respiratory issues. Current methods for assessing chemicals for their potential as respiratory sensitisers rely on a weight of evidence (WOE) approach due to limitations of individual in vivo and in vitro models. An OECD Detailed Review Paper (DRP) was recently developed to evaluate the current status of non-animal methods for predicting the potential of low-molecular-weight chemicals to induce respiratory sensitisation (OECD, 2026). The DRP highlighted the need for validated non-animal test methods that can support the development of an Integrated Approach for Testing and Assessment (IATA)/Defined Approach (DA) for identifying chemical substances as respiratory sensitisers.

Project description
The OECD has established an expert group to develop an IATA for respiratory sensitisation. The expert group has developed a questionnaire to assess the readiness of test methods for identifying and/or evaluating a chemical's potential as a respiratory sensitiser. Its purpose is to collect more comprehensive readiness assessment information on assays already included in the DRP, while also identifying and gathering information on any additional assays that may be brought to light through this process.
Submitted methods will be evaluated with respect to aspects such as:
- Test system characterisation
- Variability
- Specificity
- Reliability and relevance
- Transferability
- Data management
- Other factors relevant to method readiness and regulatory applicability
The expert group is interested in methods at all stages of development, from early-stage research through to methods nearing completion or validation.
How to contribute
Any investigator from a public or private institution involved in the development of methods to assess a chemical's potential as a respiratory sensitiser is invited to participate. Interested developers are invited to complete and return the below questionnaire by 8 October 2026.
