Join us for the first webinar in OECD's new Growing up online webinar series to explore The Meta Settlement: Implications for Child Safety and Privacy Online.
The Meta case is a significant recent development in the debate over how online platforms should protect children and young people. It arose when a group of United States states sued the tech company, alleging that it designed its platforms to keep young people compulsively engaged, misrepresented the risks involved and unlawfully collected data from children under 13. The resulting settlement includes a financial penalty and commitments to implement design changes, such as default daily time limits and nighttime use blocks. Given Meta’s global reach and user base, the outcome raises wider questions about what it could mean for policymaking, platform design and regulatory enforcement.
This webinar will feature speakers Daphne Keller, Director of Platform Regulation at Stanford Law School, and Steve Wood, Founder of PrivacyX Consulting, former Deputy Information Commissioner of the United Kingdom and former Chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Working Party on Data Governance and Privacy.
The discussion will be particularly relevant for those working on privacy, safety and consumer protection for children online. It forms part of the OECD’s ongoing efforts to support countries in protecting children in the digital environment.
