Artificial intelligence is reshaping economies, societies and the world of work. It can raise productivity, improve services and support innovation. But it also brings major challenges for employment, income security, workers’ rights and social cohesion. These issues are especially pressing at a time when large gaps in social protection remain. In 2024, only slightly more than half of the world’s population was covered by at least one social protection benefit, leaving around four billion people without any protection.
The 7th Policy Dialogue on Social Protection and Development will explore how AI could reshape social protection systems. It will look at AI from two angles. First, as a driver of change in labour markets, with possible effects on jobs, skills, income stability and access to social protection. Second, as a tool that governments and social protection institutions can use to improve service delivery, strengthen targeting, speed up payments, reduce administrative costs and better anticipate shocks.
The discussion will also address the risks linked to AI in social protection, including bias, exclusion errors, data protection concerns, weak accountability and loss of public trust.
The event will bring together OECD Development Centre member countries, USP 2030 members, partner countries, experts and practitioners to share experiences and discuss practical policy options.
Interpretation in French and English will be available.
