The security crisis in the Sahel is seriously disrupting the functioning of markets and cereal prices in areas affected by violence, particularly in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Nigeria. Monitoring by CILSS revealed irregular functioning of supply chains and a significant proportion of closed markets in February 2023.
These market malfunctions, due to insecurity, are causing food prices to rise. In February 2023, the annual variation in cereal prices in Burkina Faso was estimated at 54%. In the provinces of Yagha, Loroum, and Soum, where security tensions are high, the annual variation in the price of millet is 245%, 184%, and 130% respectively, compared with the five-year average. This is also the case in northern Mali, where millet prices in insecure areas are 45% higher than the national annual average.
