Mauritania on Tuesday, 21 January confirmed its membership of the Governing Board of the OECD Development Centre. This brings Governing Board membership to a total of 55 countries, of which 13 are African. The European Union also takes part in the work of the Development Centre.
Mauritania’s membership follows an invitation approved by the Council of the OECD. It reinforces policy dialogue between OECD and non-OECD members and supports Mauritania’s efforts to advance inclusive and sustainable development.
Mauritania, which is undergoing a deep economic transformation, occupies a strategic position as a link between North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. As a member of the Development Centre, Mauritania will participate fully in policy dialogue and analysis, sharing its own experiences as a key regional actor while benefiting from peer learning.
Membership will support Mauritania’s reform priorities of economic diversification, youth employment, human capital development, governance, access to basic services, and environmental sustainability, in line with its Accelerated Growth and Shared Prosperity Strategy (SCAPP).
Mauritania has an established record of co-operation with the OECD and the Development Centre. Since 2018, it has been featured in Africa’s Development Dynamics, and since 2019 in Revenue Statistics in Africa. Mauritania participates in the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) and has contributed to OECD initiatives on natural resource-based development, tax transparency and domestic resource mobilisation, including the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting.
Mauritania’s membership will enrich the Development Centre’s analytical work and policy dialogue, strengthen its engagement with Africa, and improve synergies across OECD workstreams.
