Vēzis ir trešais izplatītākais mirstības cēlonis Latvijā, un katrs sestais priekšlaicīgas (pirms 75 gadu vecuma) nāves gadījums (18%) būs saistīts ar vēzi laikā no 2023. līdz 2050. gadam. Kopumā tiek lēsts, ka katru gadu būs 1,600 priekšlaicīgas nāves gadījumi no vēža, un vidējais iedzīvotāju dzīves ilgums būs par 1,7 gadiem mazāks nekā tad, ja nebūtu vēža.
1 in 6 priekšlaicīgas nāves cēlonis ir vēzis
1. Aprēķinus iegūst, salīdzinot pamatscenāriju ar hipotētisku scenāriju, kurā vēža nav, un tādējādi ņemot vērā citu slimību radītās izmaksas. Tā kā cilvēki, kuriem vēzis neattīstās, dzīvo ilgāk un viņiem attīstās citas slimības, dažās valstīs tas var izraisīt veselības aprūpes izdevumu vispārēju pieaugumu.
Vismaz trīs faktori nākotnē palielinās vēža veselības aprūpes izdevumus. Pirmkārt, vēža risks palielinās līdz ar vecumu. Latvijas iedzīvotājiem novecojot, tas novedīs pie tā, ka laikā no 2023. līdz 2050. gadam par 49% pieaugs veselības aprūpes izdevumi uz vienu iedzīvotāju vēža ārstēšanai, visiem pārējiem apstākļiem paliekot vienādiem. Otrkārt, centieni samazināt vēža iznākuma atšķirības dažādās valstīs varētu nozīmēt, ka cilvēki dzīvo ilgāk, viņiem ir nepieciešama ilgāka ārstēšana un viņi var atkal saslimt ar vēzi. Tas palielinātu vēža izmaksas vēl par 28 % tajā pašā periodā. Treškārt, augstākas ārstēšanas izmaksas, ko rada jaunas zāles un tehnoloģijas, varētu vēl vairāk palielināt kopējās izmaksas.

novērstu vienu no diviem priekšlaicīgiem vēža nāves gadījumiem,
palielinātu iedzīvotāju vidējo dzīves ilgumu par 8 mēnešiem,
būtu līdzvērtīgs 600 pilnas slodzes darba ņēmēju palielinājumam,
palielinātu kopējos veselības aprūpes izdevumus par 1,5%.

Sasniedzot starptautiskās politikas mērķus attiecībā uz galvenajiem vēža riska faktoriem, tiktu novērsti aptuveni 8% no visiem vēža gadījumiem un 13% priekšlaicīgas nāves gadījumu vēža dēļ.
Optimāla cilvēka papilomas vīrusa (HPV) vakcinācija Latvijā, kur augsts aptveres līmenis nodrošina pietiekamu kolektīvo imunitāti, lai likvidētu visas inficēšanās ar mērķa HPV tipiem, varētu novērst 88% priekšlaicīgas nāves gadījumu no dzemdes kakla vēža un samazināt veselības izdevumus vēža ārstēšanai par 828 tūkstošiem eiro gadā.
