28 June 2022 Lisbon, Portugal
The United Nations Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address the many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs. To mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.
OECD side-event "Sustainable Ocean Economies that can drive a Blue Recovery and Sustainable Development" will provide an opportunity to discuss the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on the ocean economies of small island developing states. It will explore how existing ocean economy sectors can be restarted more sustainably and how new, sustainable opportunities from the ocean economy can be seized, giving impetus to a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive recovery. This event will provide an opportunity to investigate and discuss countries’ practical experiences, potential barriers, enabling actions and new initiatives to facilitate a sustainable blue recovery. Focus on new initiatives will include the UNEP Sustainable Blue Economy Transition Framework, and the Blue Recovery Hub of Fiji, a collaboration between the OECD, World Economic Forum and Friends of Ocean Action. New initiatives will also include the G20 proposal for a Global Action Plan for a Blue Recovery.
This event will see the official launch of the Fiji Blue Recovery Hub report: "Towards a Blue Recovery in Fiji“. The Blue Recovery Hub of Fiji is a collaboration between the OECD, Friends of Ocean Action, and the World Economic Forum.
