Media-Friendly Glossary on Migration: Middle East Edition

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and The International Labour Organization (ILO)

Launched in 2017

In 2017, the United Nations Alliance of Civilization (UNAOC) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched a tool for journalists across the Middle East and Gulf region to ensure rights-based and gender-sensitive media reporting on migration. Available in English and Arabic, the glossary details technical terminology relating to forced labor, trafficking in persons, displacement, refugees and labor migration, and proposes accurate and neutral alternatives to inflammatory and discriminatory language. The “Media-Friendly Glossary on Migration: Middle East Edition” is based on the Media-Friendly Glossary on Migration produced by UNAOC and Panos Europe Institute in 2014 with the support of Open Society Initiative for Europe.

“When media are informed and report on a broad range of migration issues in an exact and sensitive manner, they play an important role in informing and educating the public and helping to confront and counter negative attitudes and behaviors towards migrants. Informed public debate, in turn, supports sound policy-making in respect of international human rights principles.”
