These publications present detailed data on the industrial activity of multinationals in OECD countries. In an era of globalisation, these data highlight the increasing importance of multinationals in the economies of host countries. Time series cover 23 countries for the period 2000-2004.

  • Volume I provides data for the manufacturing sector covering 18 variables including production, employment, investment, research and trade.
  • Volume II presents data for services. The variables covered relate to inward as well as outward investment.

Since the mid-1980s and with the quickening pace of globalisation of the economy, foreign direct investment has become central to worldwide industrial restructuring and one of the most dynamic elements of international transactions.

Until recently, the only internationally available information on foreign investment was on capital stocks and flows, collected for balance of payments statistics. This information is still published by the OECD in its International Direct Investment Statistics Yearbook.

The need to assess the role and impact of direct investment, not only in financial terms but also in the context of its impact on jobs, sales and trade, has underlined the importance of having data indicative of the industrial activity of multinational firms. Measuring Globalisation: Activities of Multinationals presents detailed data on the role played by multinationals in the OECD economies.

These publications do not only provide basic data but also the share of an industry that is "controlled" by foreign multinationals in each country. To obtain these percentages, in most cases the same surveys were used to collect data on the activity of all firms (domestic and foreign) in each country and for each of the variables available.

Volume I: Manufacturing, 2000-2004

Volume I provides data for the manufacturing sector, including the activity of affiliates of national firms abroad (outward investment), and covers 18 variables, including production, employment, investment, research and trade. Data in this volume relate to the years 1999/2000 - 2003/2004 and are classified according to International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 3.

Volume II: Services, 2000-2004

Volume II presents data on the activity of multinational firms in the services sector. These data relate to inward as well as outward investment.

The following variables are covered:

  • Number of enterprises
  • Number of employees
  • Turnover
  • Value added
  • Compensation of employees
  • R&D expenditure
  • Number of researchers
  • Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF)
  • Total exports
  • Total imports
  • Intra-firm exports
  • Intra-firm imports

These data provide a measure of the impact of foreign direct investment on the economies of the OECD countries. From this standpoint, they provide a vital backup for data on direct investment flows.
