Typologies: Variety of international instruments

Within the diverse landscape of international instruments, some patterns can be identified across the various instruments adopted by IOs, which allows them to be grouped into broad families with shared characteristics, as portrayed below.

Specific modalities and definitions may vary between IOs and the typology presented is not intended as an exhaustive categorisation of every type of instrument. There are significant fluidity and overlaps across families. International instruments form a continuum rather than a series of distinct categories.
