Environmental Impacts of International Shipping

Air pollution is costing advanced economies plus China and India an estimated USD 3.5 trillion a year in premature deaths and ill health and the costs will rise without government action to limit vehicle emissions. Taxation of different sources and uses of energy will play a key role in governments’ efforts to mitigate the scale of global warming. What impact has globalisation had on transport? And what have been the consequences for the environment? Focus on five ports: Los Angeles and Long Beach, the United States; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Port Metro, Canada; and Busan, Korea.
This report provides evidence on the health impacts from air pollution and the related economic costs, based on extensive new epidemiological evidence. This book provides the first systematic statistics of effective tax rates for each OECD country, illustrating the wide variations in tax rates per unit of energy or per tonne of CO2 emissions. This book aims to answer these questions and looks at how globalisation has affected activity levels in maritime shipping, aviation, and road and rail freight. This book examines the environmental impacts of international maritime transport, and looks at the impacts stemming from near-port shipping activities, the handling of the goods in the ports.
