Events on biodiversity

The OECD maintains an active programme of biodiversity-related events:

Participation in international conferences and workshops dedicated to biodiversity issues – where recent OECD work is shared and further discussed with government officials and biodiversity experts from all over the world.
Side-events and presentations in key international events, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties (COP) – where policy messages from recent and on-going work are showcased.
The OECD convenes international workshops and expert meetings to help implement the OECD programme on biodiversity and ecosystems by bringing relevant stakeholders together from e.g. the private sector, academia, and other practitioners and experts to exchange information on a particular on-going OECD project.

Upcoming and recent events are listed below. More information about participation possibilities and outcomes can be obtained through the links provided. In addition, OECD experts are often called to make biodiversity-related presentations in international events, and to provide expert input to global or regional processes.

During his speech, Secretary-General Mathias Cormann outlined the critical elements the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework will need to address to be ambitious and effective, and highlighted actions the OECD will undertake to implement it.

2016

December	OECD at the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP13) on "Mainstreaming Biodiversity for Well-Being", December 2016, Cancun. OECD presentation on MPAs and their role in ecosystem provision, sustainable fisheries and tourism - UNCTAD/UNEP/CAF side event on Oceans Economy and Ecosystems Services. The side event raised awareness and discussed novel international and regional approaches to address harmful incentives to marine biodiversity and ecosystem conservation and maximise the use of beneficial ones in key sustainable oceans economic sector such as fisheries and tourism, and their interlinkages under an ecosystem approach, for the advancement of SDG14 and Aichi targets. OECD presentation on indicators relevant for Aichi Target 3 - BIP side event on Understanding the Global Biodiversity Indicator Landscape. The draft decision for Agenda Item 19, ‘Guidelines for the sixth national reports, modalities for future editions of the Global Biodiversity Outlook and indicators’, endorses an updated list of indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership explored how these processes interrelate and how harmonisation of indicators is taking place and launched its redeveloped website and interactive search facility. OECD side event on Mainstreaming biodiversity and development. The event drew on preliminary messages from an on-going OECD project on Biodiversity and Development that examines mainstreaming efforts in a range of countries, at national and sectoral levels. Speakers shared experiences and insights on the key opportunities and challenges to mainstreaming biodiversity (Mexico, Ethiopia, EC and Germany). OECD side event on Risk-safety assessment in modern biotechnology focused on the OECD's activities as to how it accomplishes the objective through the Working Group on Harmonisation of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology, Biosafety - BioTrack made available as tools for risk assessors and regulators, and the Biotrack product database. The OECD workshop - Biodiversity related development finance: Towards better tracking facilitated a dialogue on recent developments in tracking biodiversity-related finance: Session 1 shared approaches to tracking bilateral and multilateral biodiversity-related development finance, as well as biodiversity-related expenditures domestically; with a discussion on key opportunities and challenges for improving the tracking of international and domestic biodiversity expenditure. Session 2 - the OECD demonstrated how the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Creditor Reporting System (CRS) can be used to track biodiversity-related official development assistance (ODA) using the Rio marker methodology; with country experiences (Ethiopia, Madagascar, Peru, and Vietnam) in using the system to understand the nature of biodiversity-related development finance either received or provided. September	OECD Environment Ministerial: Sessions on mainstreaming biodiversity across sectors and effective management of marine protected areas
May	The OECD convened a side-event on Mainstreaming Biodiversity and Development at the CBD SBI meeting in Montreal, Canada. The event highlighted the opportunities, challenges and lessons learned on mainstreaming biodiversity and development across national and sectoral policies in developing countries. November 2015	The OECD participated in the CBD international expert workshop on Biodiversity Mainstreaming in Mexico and presented on the role of economic incentives and perverse subsidies in biodiversity mainstreaming.
September 2015	The OECD participated in the CBD AHTEG on Biodiversity Indicators for the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity
February 2015	OECD Workshop on Biodiversity and Development - Mainstreaming and Managing for Results This workshop, jointly convened by the Environment and the Development Co-operation Directorates, brought together over 85 representatives from the biodiversity and development co-operation communities to share experiences and insights on the key opportunities and challenges to mainstreaming biodiversity into development policies and planning and into development co-operation.
