The long, uneven process of recovery from the current health, economic and societal crisis takes place in a world already in need of big changes. The current situation places even greater emphasis on transforming how our economies and societies work. The list of demands is huge: accelerating the ecological transition; ensuring access to healthcare even in remote and sparsely populated areas; reinventing businesses so that they can thrive online; learning online; creating new tools to make remote work more productive and effective.
The opportunity for disruptive innovation is even greater. Governments, research centers and big firms have been asked to play a leading part. But they can’t do it all. Start-ups play a pivotal role in pioneering new solutions and in creating and disrupting markets. Are they doing so? And could they do more?
This DEVTalk provides an opportunity to clarify the role of start-ups in development and to discuss what start-ups can do to reshape tomorrow’s economy. It will bring to the table the experience of entrepreneurs and policy shapers from Israel, the “Start-up Nation”, and South Africa, an emerging start-up hub.
