17/06/2021 - The West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) is a longstanding partner of the Global Forum through the Africa Initiative, which was launched in 2014 to unlock the potential of tax transparency and exchange of information in Africa and increase revenue mobilisation through the fight against tax evasion. Twelve of the 15 WATAF member countries are also members of the Global Forum.
As an observer to the Global Forum, WATAF will participate in plenary meetings and other events. It will contribute to the promotion of international exchange of information among tax administrations as a powerful tool to tackle cross-border tax evasion and improve domestic resource mobilisation.
”WATAF's observership at the Global Forum marks a turning point in our aspiration to engage with relevant international organisations to promote tax transparency and efficient tax administrations in West Africa,” said Mr Babatunde Oladapo, Executive Secretary of WATAF. ”It is our sincere expectation that the Global Forum will provide the necessary linkages to other opportunities available globally to plug tax loopholes thereby stemming illicit financial flows from Africa.”
Observers of the Global Forum include major international and regional organisations, among which the African Development Bank Group, the African Tax Administration Forum and the African Union Commission, who already collaborate with the Global Forum secretariat to advance the tax transparency agenda on the African continent.
The Global Forum is the world’s leading multilateral body mandated to ensure that all jurisdictions adhere to the same high standard of international co-operation in tax matters. This is done through a robust monitoring and peer review process. The Global Forum also has an extensive capacity building programme to provide support to its members to implement the standards and quickly use the tools available to tax administrations to fight cross-border tax evasion.
