Protecting terrestrial areas contributes to biodiversity conservation and provision of ecosystem services. Protected areas now cover on average 16% of land area in OECD countries. 26 OECD countries meet the Aichi 2020 target to protect at least 17% of their land area. However, there are large variations among countries in the extent, quality and management objectives of terrestrial protected areas.
This dataset provides country-level protected area coverage for the terrestrial domain calculated from the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA).
