OECD Roundtable on Cities and Regions for the SDGs

As part of the OECD Programme on OECD Programme on a Territorial Approach to the SDGs, the 2nd OECD Roundtable on Cities and Regions for SDGs took place on 9 December 2019 at the World Conference Center Bonn, Germany. The Roundtable gathered 130+ representatives from a wide range of cities, regions, national governments, and from the European Commission (DG REGIO, DG DEVCO, JRC), alongside international organisations (UNFCCC, UN SDG Action Campaign, UNESCO), networks of cities and regions (Committee of the Regions, ICLEI, C40, CEMR) and other stakeholders such as the German Development Institute, the Nordic Council of Ministers, ASviS, the Bertelsmann Foundation, among others.

The Roundtable also saw the launch of the OECD Policy Paper- Decentralised development co-operation- Unlocking the potential of cities and regions.


Building on the results of the 1st Roundtable, this 2nd edition, hosted by the City of Bonn:


  • Reached a deal on the assessment, recommendations and checklist from the upcoming OECD Report “A Territorial Approach to the Sustainable Development Goals: A Role for Cities and Regions to leave no-one behind”;

  • Took stock of what’s working in Bonn (Germany), Kitakyushu (Japan), Córdoba (Argentina), Flanders (Belgium), Southern Denmark (Denmark), Viken (Norway), Kópavogur (Iceland), Parana (Brazil) and Moscow (Russian Federation);

  • Fine-tuned the OECD localised indicator framework for SDGs and discuss data produced from 601 regions and 649 cities worldwide;

  • Shared lessons and showcased experiences from leading cities, regions, national governments and international organisations;

  • Defined a path to support cities and regions developing Voluntary Local Reviews and be further engaged in Voluntary National Reviews.
