The event was organised by the OECD Trento Centre for Local Development in collaboration with the Municipality of Trento, Italy within the 16th edition of the Festival of Economics "The return of the State: Businesses, Communities and Institutions", 3-6 June 2021, Trento, Italy
What's the issue
Cultural and creative sectors are important in terms of their economic footprint and employment. They are among the hardest hit by the pandemic. The rescue packages to support the sector have been unprecedented in their scope and scale. While this support is gradually phasing out, there is an opportunity for countries, cities and regions to capitalise on the role of culture for a more inclusive recovery to build back better.
What was discussed
There is an opportunity to move towards growth models fostering cross-sectoral collaborations to drive future innovation, while also capitalising on the role of culture to address complex societal challenges: exclusion and marginalisation, or the need to promote environmentally friendly behaviours. The contribution of culture can also be important in other areas of local development, from rebuilding public trust to contributing to post-pandemic urban design adapted to social distancing rules. How can the State enable such transformations and facilitate multi-stakeholder approaches and cross-sectoral strategies?
