I am pleased to join you today at the Forum of Arab Regulators on Corporate Governance. The OECD is deeply engaged in strengthening global economic governance by supporting the G7 and the G20, but also through regional initiatives with countries that do not participate in those fora.

I know that I am joining a small, and exceptionally distinguished circle, including President Shimon Peres, whom I have welcomed personally to the OECD in Paris. In five years, Israel has become an important contributor to the OECD’s work. Its expertise on key areas of our economies, like water management, “clean tech”, innovation and entrepreneurship, has become a source of best practices.

By looking at a single country under the microscope we can hone in on the fine details: we can describe the level and distribution of well-being in Israel, but also go beyond this to look at the sustainability of well-being over time, how well-being measures can be used to inform policy, and to identify the key data gaps associated with measuring well-being in Israel.

When people ask how’s life in Israel, we can tell them that life satisfaction, health status and educational attainment of Israelis is well above the OECD average. We also know that challenges remain, particularly as regards income poverty, housing and air quality.
