Mr. Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the OECD, speaking at ESPAS (European Strategy and Policy Assessment System) conference, 18 November 2020

 

Mr. Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the OECD, delivered a video message for the 2020 ESPAS (European Strategy and Policy Assessment System) annual conference Thinking about the Future: Europe’s Road to 2030, on 18 November 2020.

Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President for Inter-institutional Relations and Foresight, European Commission, opened the session “After the European Commission’s first Annual Strategic Foresight Report - Building the future of EU strategic foresight” with a Keynote address. The Secretary-General then spoke along with Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister of Economy and Energy of Germany, Ana Paula Zacarias, Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal and Karoline Edtstadler, Federal Minister for the EU and Constitution of Austria.

The Secretary-General emphasised how, in times of rapid change and high uncertainty, strategic foresight can help to design and deliver better policies. He highlighted in particular the importance of future-proofing upcoming recovery plans so that these significant investments and reforms account for a wide range of possible future scenarios.
