Launch of the Green Cities programme
Building on the discussions of the 2010 Paris Roundtable and contributing to the OECD’s horizontal work on green growth, the OECD launched the Green Cities programme in May 2010. The programme seeks to assess how urban green growth and sustainability policies can contribute to improve the economic performance and environmental quality of metropolitan areas and thus enhance the contribution of urban areas to national growth, quality of life and competitiveness.
The Green Cities programme includes the development of a conceptual framework on cities and green growth, a series of case studies, and environmental quality indicators at the metropolitan scale, and will culminate with a comparative analysis of urban green growth initiatives.
The comparative report, to be finalised in 2013, will analyse case studies and performance indicators to identify best practices and policy tools at the urban scale, particularly in the transportation, building and energy sectors. The report will assist both national and local governments evaluate the opportunities for pursuing green growth strategies within cities.
