In some sectors with special technical and financial characteristics, the financial disciplines applicable to officially supported export credits have been set out in separate agreements called “Sector Understandings”.

The four existing Sector Understandings cover export credits in the area of ships, nuclear power plants, civil aircraft , renewable energy, climate change mitigation and water projects.

These Understandings reflect the fact that such sectors need disciplines, tailor-made to meet their construction and financing needs, market needs, appropriate financing practices and Participants’ policies.

As a matter of principle, the Sector Understanding on Ships (SSU), on Nuclear Power Plants (NSU) or on Climate Change Mitigation and Water Projects (CCSU), are not self-contained agreements and are read in conjunction with the Arrangement disciplines.

However, as an exception to this principle, the Aircraft  Sector Understanding is a self-contained agreement which operates with no recourse to any of the provisions of the Arrangement.
