The STAN Bilateral Trade Database by industry and end-use (BTDIxE) is a new tool for analysing global production networks. This database presents international trade in goods broken down both by industrial sectors and by end-use categories allowing, for example, insights into the patterns of trade in intermediate goods between countries to track global production networks and supply chains, and helping to address policy issues such as trade in value added and trade in tasks.
BTDIxE is an extension of the BTD collection previously maintained by OECD and which covered bilateral trade in goods by industry only. BTDIxE can be accessed via OECD’s data dissemination service OECD.Stat.The first version of BTDIxE (released in December 2011) and the last version of BTD (with series up to year 2009) are also available on OECD.STAT, in the STAN Archives section.
For any questions, please write to stan.contact@oecd.org and mention BTDIxE in the title of your message.

What's new?
In BTDIxE Revision 1, the time period covered is 1990-2011 for all but three reporting countries (subject to availability of underlying product-based annual trade statistics as of mid-September 2012).
Trade flows are presented for 64 reporters (i.e. all OECD member countries and 30 non-member economies), 67 partners (i.e. 34 OECD countries, 30 non-member economies, rest of world, partner unspecified, and total world), and divided into 46 economic activities and 9 end-use categories including the three major categories: capital goods, intermediate inputs and household consumption.
BTDIxE will be updated twice a year: a complete update around the end of the year and a mid-term revision around mid-June.
Changes made since previous version of the database are available in this document.

BTDIxE is derived from the OECD's International Trade by Commodity Statistics (ITCS) database and UNSD’s COMTRADE Database, in which values and quantities of imports and exports are compiled by partner country and according to detailed product classifications (most recently Harmonised System (HS) 2007).
To compile the current version of BTDIxE, trade values are converted from product classification schemes to an industry classification and an end-use classification using 8 standard conversion keys (two for each of four versions of HS). The BTDIxE industry list is based on ISIC Rev. 3 and is compatible with other OECD data sets such as the STAN database for Industrial Analysis, the ANBERD database on Research & Development Expenditures in Industry (ANBERD), and the Input-Output Tables.
In BTDIxE, values of exports and imports, in current prices, are provided for all OECD countries and several non member economies as reporters, notably the BRIICS countries (Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, China and South Africa). The bilateral trade flows are presented in thousands of US dollars and end-use shares as a percentage of total for each industry.
A full description of BTDIxE can be found in this working paper.
